Why I’ve said NO to New Year’s Resolutions

There’s many sayings or phrases that turn my stomach and one that sits within my top ten has to be: New Year, New Me!

(I may have been guilty of saying this in the past but I have since matured – promise!)

As a new year begins people can feel this immense pressure to become a new person and totally reinvent themselves.

I’m not really sure why…

And spoiler alert: the ‘old you’ from last year is just as wonderful as the you from this year! Don’t let anyone tell you any different!

Making New Year’s Resolutions…

I understand people wanting to better themselves and I’m totally on board with that, but this can be achieved without making resolutions!

By definition a resolution is a firm decision you make on New Year’s Eve to refrain from doing ‘X thing’ in the next year.

After the pressure of Christmas and the festive period as a whole, I think it’s totally unfair to give yourself strict tasks and make firm decisions for a year that currently holds the unknown.

Personally, I feel doing so is only setting yourself up to fail.

And honestly no one wants that in the early stages of a new year (especially if you’re like me and have a fear of failure).

The alternative to New Year’s Resolutions…

Instead, I would recommend writing a list of goals for the year that you wish to achieve. They can range from as many or as little as you wish. (I normally aim for 3 BIG goals and around 5 that are smaller).

You would then break these main goals down into smaller ones. And from this, you then work on the steps you need to take to achieve the smaller goals, which will help you lead onto the overarching and main goal.

In doing so, the almost bitesize chunks are more digestible, which means looking at it as an overview, your goals will be more achievable and will look far less daunting.

It’s less of a MASSIVE change, meaning you’ll instantly feel more positive about the goals you’ve set yourself. This will also lead to there being less overwhelm and less pressure on yourself.

There’s nothing worse than starting a new year with the feeling of the weight of the world on your shoulders.

So make things easier for yourself; say no to resolutions and instead, opt for goals that can be split into smaller and more achievable steps.

But if you do make any resolution this year…

I think it should be: to be kinder and more gentle with yourself!
